The Health Collaborative

The Health Collaborative is a cross-sector coalition working together to improve the health and well-being of the Dan River Region, which includes Caswell County, NC and Danville and Pittsylvania County, VA. Our mission is to unite individuals and organizations to create action to support health for all people. The Health Collaborative does not operate programs or do direct service, but instead works as a catalyst, convener and facilitator, bringing people together for shared learning, leadership development, and collective action towards health for all. We focus on the social determinants of health and creating changes at the policy, systems, and environmental levels that reduce disparities and improve health equity. We aim to create environments where all current and future residents have access to opportunities to live healthy.

The Health Collaborative is an independently operating coalition with a Coordinating Committee made up of residents and organizations that reflect the diversity of the region. Piedmont Access to Healthcare (PATHS) and Compassion Health Care, both Federally Qualified Health Clinics (FQHC), serve as fiscal sponsors/agents, and provide strategic guidance and support. The Regional Director will be employed by PATHS or Compassion Health Care and their work will be guided by The Health Collaborative’s Coordinating Committee.

Position Summary:

The Regional Director is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all regional activities associated with The Health Collaborative (THC). These responsibilities include building community engagement, developing and nurturing strong partnerships, providing administrative and fiscal support, planning and implementing resource development strategies and leading a team of staff and volunteers. The Regional Director serves in a regional capacity and also oversees and supports the work of three local Chapters, each led by a Chapter Coordinator, ensuring communication and alignment across the region.

The primary role of the Regional Director is to facilitate the contribution and collaboration of THC members in order to build the leadership and capacity needed to carry out the work and to ensure member investment, energy and commitment. The Regional Director provides oversight and leadership to THC members in implementing health improvement strategies.

THC expects that the Regional Director will be a highly visible role throughout the region and as such will not be centrally housed, but rather work regionally on a regular basis, traveling and working from locations directed by THC’s work and not arbitrarily imposed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Align and connect individuals, organizations to local chapters and specific projects/initiatives. Provide oversight, implement team building and offer mentoring.
  • Coordinate and maintain a shared measurement system to evaluate the outcomes of collaborative activities and processes and demonstrate progress toward goals and outcomes.
  • Coordinate and oversee continuous communication, internally (with THC members and across chapters) and externally (with community residents), including maintenance and development of website content, updates to the member listserv, social media content creation, regional event management and project management platforms.
  • Provide and plan training, professional development and leadership development opportunities to maintain capacity for successful collaboration.
  • Keep individuals, organizations and projects accountable to THC’s guiding principles (equity, impact, and authentic community engagement).
  • Ensure regional initiatives are aligned with and helping to advance chapter goals (i.e. regional civic health work helps support local chapter goals of housing, transportation, etc.)
  • Provide coaching and oversight to Chapter Coordinators in the provision of their duties.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to regional task forces and work groups.
  • Investigate emerging issues, conduct research and disseminate information to assure that efforts align with best practices, including the management and oversight of THC’s Health Equity Report.
  • Develop opportunities for THC members to effectively engage in policy advocacy.
  • Work with Sustainability Director to solicit resources (funding and in-kind services) in support of THC mission and goals.
  • Serve as manager for the THC budget, ensuring expenditures adhere to allocations and priorities, and coordinating with the finance staff at PATHS and Compassion Health Care to coordinate timely, accurate financial reporting for grant reporting requirements and routinely to the Coordinating Committee
  • Report and present THC progress and project findings through publications and presentations at local, state, and national meetings/conferences.
  • Conduct site-visits to other communities and provide consultation to communities doing similar work.
  • Coordinate with other staff to ensure THC attendance and participation at community activities in support of member organizations.
  • Support the hiring and ongoing performance evaluation processes of THC staff in collaboration and alignment with the organization processes of PATHS, Compassion, and/or other partners housing THC staff.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or Bachelor’s degree and 5 years experience or at least 7 years of relevant experience working in community organizing, public health or related field such as health education, administration, policy/planning, or in community/organizational psychology
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to promote a team work environment
  • Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with different personalities and individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Superb time management and judgment on how to best prioritize tasks
  • Public relations and/or marketing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills; can do well with both detail-oriented and strategy topics
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highly proficient with computer productivity applications and general computer skills

Collaborative Leadership Skills:

Collaborative leadership is unlike traditional leadership. Collaborative leaders have no formal authority and must exercise leadership in the most difficult context, when all parties involved are peers. The Regional Director must have a deep belief that people have the capacity to create their own visions and solve their own problems. Collaborative leaders are visionary, but not about a particular vision or solution for a specific issue but about how people can work together. The Regional Director must excel at convening, facilitating, and catalyzing collaboration across the region.

Therefore, The Health Collaborative is looking for a Regional Director who:

  • Upholds the collaborative process
  • Models shared leadership and decision making
  • Inspires commitment and action
  • Is respectful and values expertise from content and context experts
  • Leads as a problem solver and knows when to assert and when to engage others
  • Can build broad based involvement
  • Has or can build strong trusting relationships
  • Is seen as a neutral and credible leader
  • Is compassionate, approachable and discreet
  • Has the ability to navigate diverse communities and personalities
  • Has a strong commitment to equity
  • Demonstrates passion for people from a variety of backgrounds
  • Is dedicated to developing others and has little interest in “taking credit”
  • Sustains and leads with hope, optimism, and participation
